Are Takis Vegan Friendly?

Are Takis Vegan ?are takis vegan?

Takis are a widely popular rolled corn tortilla chip brand. The texture of the chip is similar to Doritos, to which the Sweet Chili flavor are vegan. However, it begs the question: Are Takis vegan?

The answer is that it depends. Some flavors of Takis are vegan, while others are not. According to the ingredients list on the packaging, the Fuego, Nitro and Salsa Brava flavors contain no animals products. However, the rest of the flavors contain dairy products, which makes them nonvegan.

Why do Takis contain dairy products?

When people are asking: Are Takis vegan?, many are shocked to find out that there is dairy products in chips. This isn’t just or Takis either, most chip flavors contain dairy in them. So why do they add milk in their chips?

With many chips, dairy adds to the flavor of the chip. These include flavors such as sour cream and onion, nacho cheese, and ranch, to name a few. However, some chips, like salt and vinegar, might contain dairy in them as well. Why put dairy in a chip that’s flavor is not based around dairy?

Lactose is a milk sugar that might exist in potato chips. This Is used in the more acidic chips in order to tone down the acidity. While some chips allow for their chips to be highly acidic, lactose is mean to cut that in some brands. This can help with some people who may not like the sting otherwise.

What about trace ingredients, or potential cross contamination?

The Vegan Activist has a great video on this topic titled “What Does May Contain Milk Mean”.

However, I will explain it in less detail. The reason companies put warnings, like “May contain milk” on an otherwise vegan product, has more to do with legal reasons than anything else. Some people have allergies to milk, listing that it was made in a factory that also processes milk is required.

But this does not mean there is any dairy in the final product. Factories are forced to clean their equipment thoroughly after each batch. This makes potential cross contamination highly unlikely. Also, since it would be in cross contamination, it would be in minimal amounts and not purposeful. So buying an otherwise vegan product will not support the dairy industry.

Are Takis Healthy?

Takis are a potato chip, again, similar to Doritos. Due to this, they are not in any way healthy. There are very few nutrients in these chips and a lot of calories. They are also very high in added fats and salt, which can be detrimental to your health if over consumed.
